Sanur to Nusa Penida by fast boat
Nusa Penida, the large island southeast of Bali, is famous for Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong and manta ray snorkelling. Most visitors cross from Sanur, where many fast boats leave from the beach every morning. The crossing itself is short, usually about 30–45 minutes.
How the crossing works
Operators have small offices along Sanur beach. You check in, receive a boarding pass or sticker, then walk into the shallow water to board. There is no jetty for most boats, so wear sandals or shorts and keep your phone in a dry bag. Boats land at harbours on the north coast of Nusa Penida (around Toyapakeh, Banjar Nyuh or Buyuk, depending on the operator), where drivers and scooter rentals wait.
Day trip or overnight?
A day trip is possible: take an early boat (around 7–9 am), hire a driver for the west-coast highlights, and catch an afternoon boat back. But roads on Nusa Penida are narrow and hilly, and the island is bigger than it looks, so you will only see one side in a day. Staying one or two nights lets you visit the east coast (Diamond Beach, Atuh) without rushing.
Weather and safety
- The Badung Strait can be choppy; morning boats are usually calmer.
- During big swells operators sometimes delay or cancel departures. Leave a buffer day before an international flight.
- Life jackets should be on board — check before departure. Read our fast boat tips.
Fees and practical tips
A small local visitor levy may be collected when you arrive on the island; carry some cash in small notes. Bali also charges foreign tourists a separate entry levy, paid online or on arrival in Bali. Ticket prices vary by operator and whether hotel pickup in Bali is included — compare live fares on 12Go.
