Getting around Malaysia

Updated:

Peninsular Malaysia is easy to travel: comfortable express buses link every major town, the electric ETS train runs along the west coast, and short flights connect to Borneo and the islands.

Route guides

How people get around

  • Express buses — mostly from Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur; "executive" coaches have 2+1 seating.
  • ETS trains — fast electric trains from KL Sentral north to Ipoh, Butterworth (for Penang) and beyond.
  • Ferries — to islands such as Penang (from Butterworth) and Langkawi.
  • Flights — essential for Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo.

Good to know

Trains and buses fill up around Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and school holidays. The east coast has its monsoon roughly November–February, when some island ferries stop.
