Singapore to Kuala Lumpur by bus, plane or train

Updated:

Singapore to Kuala Lumpur is about 350 km, one of Southeast Asia's busiest international routes. The express coach is the classic way; flights are quick; trains go via Johor Bahru.

Express coach

Dozens of companies run coaches from points across Singapore (for example around Golden Mile, Bugis and HarbourFront, depending on the operator) to various stops in KL such as TBS, Pudu or hotels in the city. The trip usually takes about 5–6 hours including the border, but queues can be long on Fridays, weekends and holidays. Comfortable "VIP" coaches with 2+1 seats are common and good value.

Crossing the border

The bus stops at Singapore immigration (Woodlands or Tuas) where everyone gets off with their belongings, then again at Malaysian immigration on the other side. Keep your ticket handy, note your bus number and plate, and move quickly — buses usually wait, but not forever. Check whether your nationality needs to complete Malaysia's digital arrival card before travelling.

Flight

Flights from Changi to KLIA/klia2 or Subang take about 1 hour. KLIA is roughly 50–60 km from the city centre; the KLIA Ekspres train takes about 30 minutes to KL Sentral. Total door-to-door time is often 4 hours or more.

Train

There is no direct train from Singapore to KL today. Travellers take the short KTM shuttle from Woodlands to JB Sentral in Johor Bahru, or cross the Causeway by bus, then continue north by Malaysian train. Train options and timetables on this corridor have been changing as new lines open, so check what is currently available on 12Go.

Tips

  • Avoid Friday evening departures from Singapore if you can — border queues are longest then.
  • Bring your passport, not a copy; immigration needs the original.
  • Prices vary by coach class and time; compare live on 12Go.
