Bangkok to Koh Samui: overland + ferry or flight
Koh Samui lies in the Gulf of Thailand, about 30 km off the coast of Surat Thani province. Most travellers either fly directly or use a joint ticket that combines a bus or train with a ferry.
Joint bus + ferry
Ferry companies sell combined tickets: an evening coach from Bangkok to the coast, then a catamaran or car ferry to Samui the next morning. Depending on the operator the boat leaves from Chumphon (high-speed catamaran, often stopping at Koh Tao and Koh Phangan first) or from Donsak pier near Surat Thani (car ferry, about 1.5 hours). Door to door expect about 12–16 hours.
Joint train + ferry
Take an overnight southern-line sleeper to Surat Thani (Phun Phin), then a connecting bus to Donsak and the ferry to Samui. A sleeper berth makes the night easier than a bus seat; total time is similar. Some trains also stop at Chumphon for the catamaran.
Flights
Direct flights from Suvarnabhumi to Samui Airport take about 1 hour. Samui's airport is privately owned and has few airlines, so fares tend to be higher than to other Thai destinations. A cheaper alternative is to fly into Surat Thani and take a combined bus-and-ferry ticket from the airport to Samui (a few hours more).
Which to choose
- Fastest: direct flight to Samui.
- Best value with speed: flight to Surat Thani + bus/ferry.
- Cheapest: joint bus + ferry.
- Most comfortable overland: sleeper train + ferry.
Tips
- The Gulf side has its rainiest months roughly October–December; ferries can be rough or delayed then.
- Check which pier your Samui ferry arrives at (Nathon, Lipa Noi or Bangrak) and arrange onward transport.
