Bangkok to Chiang Mai by train, bus or plane

Updated:

The trip from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, about 700 km north, is one of Thailand's classic journeys. You can fly in just over an hour, ride a VIP bus overnight, or take the famous sleeper train and wake up among the northern hills.

Sleeper train

Long-distance trains to the north leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (formerly Bang Sue Grand Station), which replaced Hua Lamphong for most long-distance services in 2023. Overnight trains take roughly 11–13 hours. Second-class sleeper berths are the popular choice: seats convert into curtained bunks at night, the lower bunk is wider and has a window, the upper bunk is a bit cheaper. First-class private cabins exist on some trains. Sleeper berths can sell out days ahead in the high season (roughly November–February).

Bus

VIP and first-class buses leave from Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (Mo Chit) and take about 9–11 hours. VIP buses have fewer, wider seats that recline deeply and often include a snack. Night buses save a hotel night, but you arrive early in the morning. Check whether your bus arrives at Chiang Mai's Arcade bus terminal, a short ride from the old city.

Flight

Flights from Don Mueang (DMK) or Suvarnabhumi (BKK) to Chiang Mai take about 1 hour 15 minutes, and Chiang Mai's airport is close to the old city. Including travel to the airport and check-in, plan on 4 hours door to door.
