Getting around Thailand

Updated:

Thailand has one of the easiest transport networks in Southeast Asia: overnight trains run north and south from Bangkok, VIP buses reach almost every town, and ferries connect the islands on both coasts.

Route guides

How people get around

  • Trains leave Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal for the north (Chiang Mai) and south (Surat Thani, Hat Yai). Sleeper berths are comfortable and popular.
  • Buses run from Mo Chit (north and northeast), Ekkamai (east coast) and the Southern Terminal (south). VIP buses have 24 wide seats.
  • Ferries and speedboats serve the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) and the Andaman islands (Phi Phi, Lanta).
  • Joint tickets combine a bus or train with a ferry in one booking.
  • Domestic flights are cheap and frequent from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi.

Seasons

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) has rougher seas around May–October; the Gulf coast (Samui, Phangan, Tao) is wettest roughly October–December. Book ahead for Songkran (April) and the December–January peak.
