Hanoi to Ha Long Bay

Updated:

Ha Long Bay, with its thousands of limestone islands, is about 150–170 km east of Hanoi. Since the expressway opened, the drive takes roughly 2.5–3 hours, making day trips and overnight cruises easy to reach.

Does your cruise include transport?

Many overnight cruises sell a shuttle from Hanoi's Old Quarter as part of the package. Check this first — you may only need to book transport one way, or not at all. If you are travelling independently or staying in Ha Long city (Bai Chay), book your own transport.

Limousine van

Limousine vans carry about 9–11 passengers in big reclining seats and often pick up from hotels in the Old Quarter. They are the most popular independent option: comfortable, reasonably priced and frequent.

Shuttle bus

Larger shuttle and public buses are cheaper but usually leave from bus stations rather than hotels, and may drop you in Ha Long city instead of at the cruise pier.

Private car

A private car with driver is the most flexible option for families or groups, and lets you stop on the way. 12Go lists private transfers on this route.

Know your pier

Cruise boats leave from different harbours: many use Tuan Chau island marina, others the international cruise port in Hon Gai/Bai Chay, and some go to Lan Ha Bay via Hai Phong or Cat Ba. Tell your driver the exact pier name in advance.

Tips

  • Boats can be suspended when storms are forecast, mainly in summer (roughly June–September). Keep your plans flexible.
  • Leave Hanoi early in the morning to make midday cruise check-ins.
  • Prices vary by vehicle and pickup; compare on 12Go.
