Hanoi to Sapa by bus, van or night train
Sapa, in the mountains of northwest Vietnam near the Chinese border, is known for rice terraces, trekking and ethnic-minority villages. Since the Hanoi–Lao Cai expressway opened, road has become the quickest way there, while the night train remains a classic.
Sleeper bus and limousine van
Buses and "limousine" vans leave Hanoi day and night and take about 5–6 hours to Sapa town. Options include:
- Sleeper bus — lie-flat berths in two levels; good for night travel, though berths are short for tall people.
- Cabin / VIP sleeper bus — semi-private pods with curtains.
- Limousine van — 9–11 large reclining seats; comfortable for day trips.
Many operators pick up in Hanoi's Old Quarter, which saves a trip to the bus station.
Night train to Lao Cai
Overnight trains leave Hanoi Station in the evening and reach Lao Cai early the next morning, after about 8 hours. Soft-sleeper four-berth cabins are the usual choice; some private carriages attached to the train offer nicer cabins. From Lao Cai station, a shuttle bus or taxi climbs to Sapa in about an hour.
