Luang Prabang to Vientiane by train, bus or plane

Updated:

The Laos–China Railway, opened in 2021, transformed travel in Laos. The trip between Luang Prabang and the capital Vientiane, once a long day on winding mountain roads, now takes about 2 hours by train.

By train

Trains run several times a day, stopping at Vang Vieng and other towns. There are faster EMU services and slower stopping trains; second class is comfortable for this distance.

  • Stations are outside town: Luang Prabang station is several kilometres from the old town, and Vientiane station is well outside the city centre. Allow 20–40 minutes for a shuttle or taxi at each end.
  • Bring your passport: tickets are issued in your name and checked; there is airport-style security.
  • Arrive early: stations open check-in only shortly before departure and gates close a few minutes before. Aim to be there 45–60 minutes early.
  • Tickets sell out: in high season and Lao holidays seats go quickly. Booking through 12Go lets you secure a seat ahead.

By minivan or bus

Minivans and buses still run on Route 13 and the newer roads, often via Vang Vieng. Expect about 7–10 hours with stops; the scenery is spectacular but the road is winding. It's a fallback if trains are sold out.

By plane

Flights take under an hour, but with the train this fast, flying rarely saves time unless you are connecting to an international flight.

Tips

  • Break the journey in Vang Vieng for kayaking and caves — the train makes stopovers easy.
  • Carry some cash in kip for station transport.
  • Schedules change; check live times and fares on 12Go.
